My plan after I finish my undergraduate degree is to work at a high school as an athletic trainer or in a physical therapist clinic for a few years. During that time I will either complete my last few prerequisites in order to apply for a PA program, or I will apply to graduate school and earn my doctorate degree in physical therapy. I have not yet decided which field I would like to go into, while they are similar they are also very different. If I were to become a physicians assistant I would specialize in pediatrics in sports medicine. When applying for a PA program you need 1500-3000 hours worth of clinical experience. My time spent as either an athletic trainer or in a PT office would help me gain experience and hours. Shadowing is another tool I can utilize to help make the final decision; shadowing exposes you to exactly what you would be encountering on a daily basis, it can be one of the best tools when choosing the right career. Overall I want to help athletes who have sustained injuries detrimental to their athletic career, help them overcome them, and return to their passion. Helping children is extremely fulfilling because they are so eager to get better and so willing to learn.
Volunteering at places like Riley's Children Hospital has helped confirm this career is something I am passionate about, and want to continue pursuing.
